galaxysiiinewMobile World Congress is an annual event that mobile aficionados usually look forward to because this is an event where different manufacturers take center stage to unveil their new breed of devices. This year’s MWC however is not as exciting compared to those we saw in the past couple of years because only a handful of device unveilings were really notable and worth mentioning. Another thing that we look forward to during MWC is the announcement of winners in the Global Mobile Awards which is said to be the Academy Awards of gadgets.

And as expected, the Samsung Galaxy S III went home with the Smartphone of the Year award at this year’s Global Mobile Awards.  Not that this is surprising at all given the fact that the Samsung flagship device is one firecracker of a smartphone that comes with an impressive resume and brings an impressive set of capabilities to the table. And because of that, the Samsung Galaxy S III has been selling like crazy since hitting the shelves back in May last year and now has racked up more than 40 million units sold on a global scale.

And according to the judges’ comments, the Samsung Galaxy S III exemplifies the Android success story and we quote, “With its ability to deliver in multiple markets, proven global adoption, and leading edge features such as Pop-up Play, Smart Stay screen and NFC, this is the Android success story.” In addition to that, the Korean smartphone and tablet manufacturer bagged the Device Manufacturer of the Year award.

As for the Samsung Galaxy S III, the handset remains as one of the more popular handsets in the market today despite the arrival of other high-end devices from other manufacturers. The handset boasts of a sexy profile with measurements of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm while its catch weight is pegged at a mere 134 grams. With this size, the Samsung Galaxy S III is a bit massive for people with dainty hands but its catch weight makes the handset very comfortable to hold even for extended periods of time.

Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy S III already runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for its operating system and this draws power from the handset’s QualComm MSM8960 SnapDragon chipset. This SoC brings into play a dual-core Krait processor clocked at 1.5 GHz and a whopping 2GB of RAM working together to ensure that the performance of the Samsung Galaxy S III is always snappy and buttery smooth. The handset can be had in a 16GB and a 32GB version in terms of storage space but this can still be expanded using the Samsung Galaxy S III’s microSD card slot. As for its display, the handset sports a massive 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED HD panel with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels while its camera department features an 8MP shooter at its back panel and a 1.9MP snapper at its front bezel.
