Samsung Galaxy S II Epic Touch 4G Reviewed: Best Galaxy S II Model?

The Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch is the first Galaxy S II variant to hit the United States consumer electronics market. All told, global sales of all Galaxy S II models have passed the 35 million mark, with the Epic 4G Touch exclusive to the Sprint Wireless 4G network. Released on September 16 of last year, the handset has been a flagship device for the Sprint wireless network for a full nine months, which is a veritable lifetime in the smartphone marketplace. Sprint recently lowered the retail cost of the award-winning Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch to $0.01 with a standard new two-year activation and data agreement at select retailers.

Designed in the typical candy bar form factor as a flat, rectangular slab, the Epic 4G Touch is offered in either black or white, and measures 5.11 x 2.74 x 0.38 inches (130 x 70 x 10 mm), and weighs 4.60 ounces (130 g), in both cases average for a 4G smartphone. The 4.52 inch Super AMOLED plus capacitive touchscreen is larger than the average smartphone, and displays are rendered in more than 16 million separate colors. 206 pixels per inch deliver a screen resolution of 480 x 800 pixels overall, and Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI version 4.0 is used to navigate the device. Standard light and proximity sensors are built into the display, which has been protected by a scratch resistant layer of Corning Gorilla Glass.

Average talk time for a 4G mobile handset is 8.0 hours, and the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic Touch 4G delivers 8.70 hours of talk time and 10.5 days standby on a single charge of its 1,800 mAh battery. Powering the handset is an Exynos microchip package which includes a dual core 1.2 GHz central processor and graphics dedicated Mali 400MP GPU. 16 GB of storage are built-in, a microSD slot provides storage expansion, and 1.0 GB of system memory is on board.

The camera combo on the Epic Touch 4G includes the same 8.0 megapixel camcorder, 2.0 megapixel camera package seen on all Galaxy S II smartphones. That rear camcorder comes equipped with an LED flash, and delivers geo-tagging, touch to focus, autofocus, face and smile detection and image stabilizing features. Video capture is provided at 1,080P HD and 30 frames per second, and the front facing chat cam records video at 720P HD.
