The award-winning Nokia Lumia 900 mobile handset which was awarded Best of CES 2012 with its Windows phone operating system became an overnight YouTube video star earlier this year when it was portrayed in a rough and tough hammer torture test on that online video hosting website. The Corning Gorilla Glass protective overlay on the screen was put through its paces as it was used to pound a nail into a 2″ x 4″ piece of wood, and even had a nail repeatedly pounded onto its display. The handset survived with no scratches or chips, and functioned perfectly afterwards. Aside from being a rugged handset, the Nokia Lumia 900 is one of the first smartphones with a Windows phone operating system to offer 4G LTE connectivity.

Running on the AT&T 4G LTE system in the United States and debuting on April 8, the Nokia Lumia 900 also offers the largest display built by smartphone manufacturer Nokia, a 4.3 inch WVGA AMOLED model. AT&T recently reduced the retail price of the handset to bargain bin levels, and the camera package on board benefits from an exclusive Carl Zeiss optics package, with the rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder recording video at 720P HD resolution.

The Nokia Lumia 900 4G handset is designed with a polycarbonate unibody, visual imagery is rendered in 16 million unique colors, and the display offers a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. Handling operations on the Lumia 900 handset is a Qualcomm APQ8055 Snapdragon microchip package that is built around a 1.4 GHz central processor. An Adreno 205 GPU handles all graphics requests, 512 MB of RAM memory are on board, and 16 GB of storage are built-in. The 8.0 megapixel camera on the back of the handset contains an f2.2/28 mm lens, and delivers a double wide mode, autofocus and touch to focus features.

The multimedia package on board the Nokia Lumia 900 Windows smartphone includes a YouTube video player, a built-in music player that supports all major audio file formats, and a Stereo FM radio with RDS display. Flickr, Picasa and Twitter social media applications have been pre-installed, and Nokia recently announced that the Lumia 900 would receive their proprietary Nokia Music application of free of charge. That app has previously been available overseas, and allows access to more than 150 unique playlists across multiple music genres. Those playlists are accessible as downloads for off-line music listening as well.
