microsoftIt looks like Google and Apple are not the only ones that are looking to release new tablet devices this year as Microsoft recently sent out press invites for an event being held on the 23rd and is likely for the new Surface model tablets.  The invites showed up at some media outlets earlier this week and it also briefly mentions the new Surface tablets, although there are very few details.  The invites show a Surface tablet that is connected to a keyboard with the word “Surface” clearly showing in the upper right corner.

According to reports, the new Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 will look exactly the same and will be replacing the current lineup of Surface tablets from Microsoft.  The Surface tablet is made internally by Microsoft so there is very little information that gets leaked via supply chains throughout the development process, but some rumors suggest that the new tablets will feature some fixes that were wreaking havoc on the original models when they launched.  Other features includes a faster processor from Nvidia and up to 4GB of RAM, which should increase the overall performance of the device.  Other hardware includes USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 4.0 support.

The new Surface 2 Pro devices will have a new chipset as well and because of that consumers should see better battery life than they are used to with the original tablets.  Stats show that devices that switch over to the Haswell processors, which are newer than the Intel chipsets, were shown to have a battery life that increased by almost 40 percent.  Other accessories were also rumored to be coming with the new line of tablets that include a Power Cover, a Type Cover that comes with a built in battery pack that can be used to recharge the device.

Microsoft is reportedly also working on a desktop docking station for the Surface Pro tablets and with that users would be able to get rid of any older desktops that are taking up room on a desk and replace it with the docking station that will act as the new “desktop”.  Other rumors that have Microsoft tied to them include on that says the company is reportedly going to release a new tablet that is just 8-inches in size to compete with the new iPad Mini 2, but it has yet to be confirmed as of this week.
