The McAfee group has gone ahead and created a security app called “Wavesecure” for the Apple iPhone. It is a step in the right direction, even though Apple just finished putting a plug on a large security hole in their iOS mobile operating system.

Both Apple and Google have security problems with their platforms. Each have their own complex weaknesses. But McAfee has come along with some help for those who suffer the event of a stolen iPhone. They have had help for smartphones powered by Android and Nokia handsets also, but now have moved into the Apple realm.

McAfee has had an enterprise security solution for those who use the iPhone in their business. Now those who use an iPhone purely for personal use can be covered as well. The primary problems of losing a smartphone and having someone steal the data are addressed with Wavesecure. The software will enable the user to protect their data and their smartphone, even as far as creating the potential for tracking down the iPhone should it be stolen.

For ten years McAfee has been involved in mobile security, helping to protect the user from malicious and pernicious men and women. This new Wavesecure software is the “iOS edition”. It allows a user to back up much of their important data in case the unthinkable happens. All the contacts, videos and photos can be copied to a safe location. The online portal associated with the Wavesecure software will help the owner track the handset if the iPhone is ever lost or stolen. One special feature of the software is the ability to send the personal data to a smartphone that is not an iPhone. If the user loses the iPhone, the data can be reloaded to an Android smartphone if needed.

The Wavesecure app should take much of the worry out of owning an iPhone smartphone. It allows the user to wirelessly back up information. The “remote location tracking” can have secondary uses as well. If the iPhone is owned by a child, the iPhone can be used as a tracking device for a parent. Knowing where the child is at any time is an attractive feature for some parents, especially at night.

One last feature of Wavesecure is the ability to remotely lock and erase personal data. If the iPhone is lost or stolen and there looks like there is no chance of getting it back, this is a valuable feature. The thief nor anyone else will have access to the data on the handset. This software is not free. It will cost nearly $20 dollars. It is available now in the Apple app store.

  1. Recently, It’s getting even worse. Symantec is criminal & breaking the law. I can’t believe Symantec indulge David Freer & Suzy Walsham to get my person info through HR dept. for their own personal purposes, which is toally violating the privacy law. (as I have worked for Symantec before). As I called to Symantec headquarter & talked to legal Mona Ramamurthy & sent an email to all the management team (as they can’t pretend they didn’t know about it) and got no responses at all. What is Symantec management team’s thinking? What makes them to think they could break the law BOLDLY? Is US a legal & civilized country or what? Or Symantec thought they could just hide behind hundred of lawyers’ back and as one solo person I can barely hurt them at all? I wish President Obama would know this. Then he can tell the chairman & CEO of Symantec, Enrique Salem, the same words as he told Congressman Anthony Weiner “If I was him, I would resign” from Obama’s management advisory. I wish Symantec shareholders would know this, so they can sell the stocks to show their disagreement with their RUDE & ILLEGAL behaviors. I wish the press would start investigating this. Thank you.
