Amazon released their Kindle Touch eReaders after their two largest competitors, Barnes and Noble and Kobo, had already released a touch screen navigated eReading device. For all intents and purposes, Amazon created the eReading phenomenon, and it was odd to see them allow their competitors to release a new technology in the eReader marketplace first. But that was about the same time that Kindle was working on their first tablet offering, the Kindle Fire, so maybe all the Amazon helpers were stuck on that job. Whatever the case may be, Kindle has made up for that tactical error and released their own touch screen eReaders, the Kindle Touch  Wi-Fi and Kindle Touch  3G with Wi-Fi.

The Amazon Kindle Touch  Wi-Fi retails for $99 and the Kindle Touch  3G with Wi-Fi retails for $149. Both of those versions come equipped with the same 6 inch Pearl E-Ink screen as the Kindle 3, however, the new Kindle Touch devices are 11% smaller and 8% lighter than the previous version. They measure 6.8 x 4.7 x 0.40 inches, with the Kindle Touch Wi-Fi weighing 7.5 ounces and the Kindle Touch 3G weighing in at 7.8 ounces.

4 GB of onboard storage are present, and the Kindle Touch eReaders do not have an onboard microSD slot for storage expansion. However, Amazon supplies unlimited and lifetime access to free Cloud storage of all Amazon content. This means you’ll never have to worry about carrying extra microSD cards to get over the 3,000 e-book storage level that those 4 GB provide. Amazon automatically backs up all of their cloud storage each day, so the Amazon Kindle Touch eReader owner doesn’t have to worry about accidentally losing their favorite e-books, apps and games. The Kindle Touch is totally touchscreen driven, supporting multitouch gestures.

Both the 3G and Wi-Fi versions of the Kindle touch also deliver money-saving special offers to its home screen and screen savers. These offers are generally related to Amazon and Kindle content, and never show up in the middle of an e-book, game or application. The Kindle Touch also offers text to speech functionality, and will read English-language content out loud to you.

Amazon recently announced an agreement with over 11,000 libraries in the US to form a Library Lending program, and this allows the Kindle Touch user to “check out” digital copies of library books without leaving the comfort of their home. The Kindle Touch holds a battery charge for 60 days with wireless turned off and reading 30 minutes per day.
