gmailGmail is one of the most widely used email programs on the internet and now that everyone with an Android and iOS powered device is checking their email, the program has really improved over the course of the last few years.  The Gmail for iPhone application has just been updated and according to sources, it is now faster and more optimized than ever before.  Using the Gmail app on your iOS devices is much faster and the update also fixed one of the most complained about problems.

According to the reports from this week, Gmail for iPhone users can expect “no more annoying pauses” when using the app thanks to the ability to use Background refresh when users are trying to get new messages.  In order to take full advantage of the new feature, you will have to make sure that the Background Refresh is on and will need to also turn on notifications, according to Google.  Google also allows users to sign into the app without a password, or two step authorizations.  The new Gmail for iPhone app for iOS 7 works with older versions as well, but the iOS 7 software is one requirement for the Background Refresh to work.

The application has a new look as well, but the changes are subtle and not likely to be noticed by that many users.  The changes are not as drastic as the recent Hangouts for iOS update was.  If you are running iOS 7, you can turn the Background Refresh on by going to Settings > General > Background App Refresh > turn it on for Gmail.  Some users reported that after the iOS 7 update, the option as turned on by default.  Google also noted that notifications should also be turned on and that can be done via the Settings > Notification Center > Gmail.

Once your notifications are turned on for Gmail, the Background Refresh will work automatically.  The Gmail for Android app already has the speed enhancement.  Google also recently updated the Hangouts experience for the iOS devices allowing users to make calls and send videos with the iPad via the Google Chat feature.  The new Gmail for iPhone application is available right now to download for free through the App Store.  If you already have the app downloaded, you will see an update notification shortly.
