Following up on one of the most popular Verizon smartphones, the Droid X2 is due to launch on or around May 26th.  The Droid X was launched last year in July and was sold out in many areas very quickly.  The Droid X2 will be ready for direct sales on May 19th, but there hasn’t been any word on price at this point.  Some experts are expecting customers to pay around $200 with a 2 year contract.  The only pictures that can be found online look very similar to that of the original Droid X.

The Droid X was one of the most popular smartphones sold last year and Amazon had it listed as a best-seller on Cyber Monday.  Some of the specs for the Droid X2 will get a good upgrade.  The Droid X2 will be powered by a 1Ghz Tegra 2 dual-core processor, HDMI mirror mode, a 4.3 inch, 960×540 resolution display and an eight megapixel rear-facing camera.  The camera captures video at 720p and has output for 1080p.  The new Droid X2 will have 4 times more internal storage, as well as, an 8GB microSD card that will come preinstalled.  The original Droid only had 2GB of storage.  One thing the new phone will not have is a front-facing camera.

There are not many changes for the Droid X2, which will be running the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system with the Motorola Blur interface.  The industry is not really making a big deal about this phone, one that seems to be more of an update, than an upgrade.  With phones like Droid Charge from Samsung and the HTC Thunderbolt, customers will have plenty to keep their eyes on while the Droid X2 launches.

Currently, there is a user guide available from Droid-Life (in PDF format) and there you can see confirmation of the features and other operating functions.  The phone will also have support for Near Field Communications (NFC), faster performance and augmented text editing.  The Droid X2 was due to launch a week ago, but was pushed back with Verizon had to push the Samsung Droid Charge back.

The Droid X2 is not going to get as much attention, but some of the features will be a nice upgrade.  Given the other smartphones launched or launching soon, the Droid X2 will have some stiff competition right out of the gates.
