We all have read the news that HP was trying to dump off the rest of their TouchPad’s, but was NOT getting out of the tablet business. Fine, but the TouchPad didn’t come to market with the greatest reviews and I think that people lost interest almost as fast as the price dropped from $599 to $99 for the tablet. Now, Best Buy is planning to offer the tablet computer in a bundle for the holiday shopping season and I am sure it will move the TouchPad, but only because it’s included in the bundle.
Best Buy announced today that the tablet would be offered for $149 when a customer buys an HP or Compaq desktop, laptop or all-in-one computer. It seems like a pretty good deal, the computers at Best Buy are priced to be very affordable and for an additional $150 you can get a tablet to go with it. Back when the tablet was going to be discontinued in August the fire sale price of $99 quickly allowed Best Buy to sell through its entire inventory. Then HP said they had more to ship and now Best Buy has this deal.
Because HP had to produce more tablets in order to fill all the backorders from the fire sale, some wonder if they are just going to produce them in blocks as deals like this come around. The fire sale was hot, no pun intended, but some are doubting that this bundled deal from Best Buy is going to be as big of a crowd pleaser. One bad thing is that you have to buy an HP or Compaq computer, where typically the two computer makers are lower end when you compare then to any computer offered by Dell.
HP has been back and forth in an attempt to create business for them. Recently they announced selling the PC business altogether, but that announcement quickly changed just as fast as the announcement to quit support for the WebOS software. Today, WebOS rumors are pointing to a total shutdown, but we’ll have to wait and see if it actually happens. Former eBay CEO, Meg Whitman has become the CEO at HP and the company is hoping to get back on track after about one year of mistakes from former CEO Leo Apotheker, who was CEO for only 11 months.
