The Apple iPhone 4S went on sale October 14, just shortly after founder and CEO Steve Jobs’ death, and sales were as dependable and “through the roof” as most Apple iDevice launches are. Many of the Apple iPhone 4S hopefuls who waited in line Friday, and even camped out Thursday night, to ensure they were getting a slice of the new Apple creation said they were buying it simply in memory of Steve Jobs.
Several others claimed they were purchasing to get their hands on the new verbal communication virtual assistant Siri. And still others were probably purchasing because, well, it’s the latest Apple iDevice. Steve Jobs and Apple have created an amazing brand loyalty and virtually guarantee sales regardless what product they release.
Steve Wozniak, cofounder of Apple with Steve Jobs, even waited in line himself though he already had two phones on order. He said he wanted to get this time to catch up with his customer base and see firsthand how the launch was going. And while all of those are great reasons for each individual purchaser to wait in line for the new iPhone 4S, very few if any other than Steve Wozniak realized that the iPhone 4S is the first phone ever released that has an “under the radar” but unique ability to talk wirelessly to some of your watches and heart-rate monitors.
The new Bluetooth chip in the iPhone 4S can handle standard Bluetooth wireless communications, but it can also connect using almost no power. That means it can access devices which are powered by ‘button cell’ batteries which are common in watches and heart-rate monitors, and that last literally for years. Buy the iPhone 4S starting at $199.
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group, which is the industry group behind Bluetooth technology, said Monday that these smaller devices will be considered ‘Bluetooth Smart’ while larger more powerful devices such as the iPhone 4S that can communicate with them will be termed ‘Bluetooth Smart Ready’.
Casio, watchmaker out of Japan, has announced that they are launching a watch in December that will be Bluetooth Smart. It can link to your iPhone 4S and alert you to incoming messages, text messages or e-mails by beeping and or vibrating. This is obviously a handy feature if your iPhone 4S is tucked away in a coat pocket or handbag. The Apple iPhone 4S is available in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB models at retail prices of $199, $299 and $399.
