htconeHTC has been taking its time in getting the latest Android 4.4 KitKat update out to those that have the HTC One from last year.  For the most part the update has been going smoothly over the last month or so, but according to some users there is a weird bug that comes along with it.  According to some sources posting online, the bug refers to the fact that once the Android 4.4.2 update is installed, sound recording is reduced to mono only.  Users that have the camcorder app running have noticed the stereo audio is not recording normally.

One user claimed that everything seemed fine with the first video that he shot after the update, but since then the videos were only recording audio with the left channel.  At first it might have seemed to be a hardware defect, but shortly after announcing the problem, other users that have had the issue reverted back to the old software to see the problem fixed.  That means that you do not have any hardware issues, so do not take your phone back to the store for a replacement.  Another source tested the device they had to see if the problem happened and claimed that the HTC software version 4.19.401.11 seems to be causing the issue.

HTC did not acknowledge the problem yet, but it will  most likely do that very soon as more start to experience the issue.  That is likely to be followed up by a quick update to fix the problem or some workaround to get you passed the issue in the meantime.  Some workarounds that have been posted online include a simple phone reboot, but that will only work for the first video after reboot.  This can be an annoying process if you are going to record videos often.

Another workaround is a little more complex and requires you to record the first video, exit the camera app then open Google Now and tap the voice button.  For some reason, even if you say nothing, both microphones are activated and the stereo sound will go back to normal.  The only issue is that after each of the videos that you record, you will have to go back to Google Now to reset the microphones.  Until HTC comes up with a fix, these are the two processes that you have to follow.
