The latest Comscore report indicates that Apple is leading among the various smartphone manufacturers, whereas Android has retained the top position among mobile platforms in the U.S. market. The report released on Thursday was the result of a three month data collection effort that ended in February.

Statistics show Apple at the top amongst smartphone manufacturers with 38.9% market share, followed by Samsung at 21.3%. Apple has seen the highest growth since the last November 2012 report, with a 3.9% increase. Samsung has also gone up the ladder with a 1% increase. Their rise has come at the cost of other smartphone makers like HTC, Motorola and LG that presently feature in the top five. HTC, which was once a leading Android phone manufacturer, dropped to 9.3% market share from 1%. Motorola and LG made up 8.4% and 6.8% of the smartphone market after suffering a drop of 1.1% and 0.2 % respectively.

While HTC hopes to make a comeback with its flagship HTC One, as no iPhones are in the pipeline for immediate release, it will be the biggest competition for the Samsung Galaxy S IV, which is going to start hitting stores soon. Analysing the various platforms in use, Android leads the pack with 51.7% market share. iOS follows with 38.9%. The difference between Android and iOS is significant, but the shares of rest of the three platforms in the top five make the difference insubstantial. Blackberry, Windows Phone and Symbian exist on only 5.4%, 3.2% and 0.5% percent of the devices used. Windows Phone seems to have its task cut out after having passed Blackberry in most major markets (though it is still behind overall). It has even outsold the iPhone in some markets like Italy and India.

Though Android managed to maintain its position, it has slipped 2% from the previous report. Apple on the other hand has increased by 3.9%. Third-place BlackBerry lost 1.9% of its market share in the reporting period whereas Windows Phone jumped up by 0.2%. Like HTC, Blackberry too is hoping for a revival with its new Blackberry 10 OS and the flagship phone Z10. The released report was based on data collected prior to the phone’s release and did not include its sales.
