Mobilewalla is a research firm that gathers data about mobile apps and according to research the firm found, the best day to release an app is on Sunday.  In the study, the company watched the iTunes App Store and Android Market over a 17-week period that ended on September 8th of this year.  The study showed that during that 17 week period, over 91,000 apps were release for iOS and about 122,000 apps were released for the Android Market.

All four app markets are seeing an increase of 2,000 apps per day on the average.  Over the last year, the iTunes App Store increased about 250,000 apps while the Android Market grew from 115,000 to 319,774 apps.  The study gathered data over 119 days and the apps that were released during that time were sorted and put into category by release date.  Because the Android Market allows developers to choose the day, compared to Apple that releases apps after review, the exact release date is not controlled by all developers.  According to the numbers, it appears that Sunday is the day that your app will statistically do the best.  By doing the “best” that means the mobile app made it on the list of the top 240 apps.

The top 240 apps are those that get the highest ranking in each of the two stores.  42 percent of the mobile apps released on Sunday made it to the list, while only 11 percent of the Android apps made the same list.  Wednesday seemed to be the day that developers picked to launch their apps and Thursday was certainly the worst day to release an app in the Android market.  Only 7 percent of Android apps released that day would reach the top 240.  Friday was the worst for iOS apps with only 10 percent of them making the top 240 list after launch.

Other information that was found in the study, although it wasn’t really “looked” for, was that a mobile app released into the iTunes App Store was four times more likely to be discovered than an app released in the Android Market.  That is not a good number for Android and could be part of the reason Android apps fall behind in downloads compared to iOS app.  Obviously Google needs a better way to feature, or showcase their apps.
